    Political Science
    Minor:
Women Gender Studies and Social Work
    Year at NAU:
    Junior
    Hometown:
    Phoenix
Why I decided to attend NAU:

I decided to attend NAU because it was a way for me to get the "away from home" experience without going too far or paying out-of-state tuition. Once I visited the campus I knew that I could not see myself anywhere else and felt attached to its welcoming vibe and green surroundings.

    Why I joined Honors:

I joined the Honors program because I wanted to be challenged not just academically but intellectually in general. I also loved the idea of having smaller class sizes, interesting Honors courses, and the opportunity to develop my writing skills.

  • Colton 2013

    Colton Ames

    Major:
    History
    Minor:
    Comparative Study of Religions
    Year at NAU:
    Senior
    Hometown:
    Cortland, NY
Why I decided to attend NAU:

I really needed to return to a small town atmosphere. I grew up in a small college town and I knew that that was what I needed to go back to for my education. Plus, NAU is one of the best universities for future teachers!!

    Why I joined Honors:

I wanted to be part of something here that would allow me to form friendships and special bonds while I was away from home. I love the sense of community that the Honors Program offers!

  • SM1415

    Sidney Michl

    Major:
    Environmental Science
    Year at NAU:
    Senior
    Hometown:
    Scottsdale, AZ
Why I decided to attend NAU:

I love that NAU is located in such a beautiful and down-to-earth town. Flagstaff is full of a ton of nice people, and NAU offers so many of perks on its own. The small campus and classroom sizes are extremely appealing to me, as well as its proximity to many outdoor adventures and home (not too close but not too far!)

    Why I joined Honors:

I love the motivation and mental challenge that NAU's Honors program instills in me. I have always been in AP or advanced classes throughout my life so joining the program here at NAU was something I decided without hesitation. I love the community of Honors students and professors and the welcoming classes that it offers.

  • Alexis 2013

    Alexis Rigoni

    Major:
    English
    Year at NAU:
    Senior
    Hometown:
    Santa Ana, CA
Why I decided to attend NAU:

NAU has a great English program and a great Biology program, and I needed both because Biology was almost my major. Also, I wanted to experience a place where there are four seasons, unlike where I live in Orange County. Because NAU is on the west coast, I was able to be a part of the WUE program. This was also a deciding factor in coming to NAU.

    Why I joined Honors:

NAU is a relatively big college and I wanted to get to know students in a closer-knit group that have similar academic interests. I also wanted the opportunity to get the best education possible while at NAU, and I feel that the Honors program has given me that opportunity.

  • Becky 2013

    Rebecca Hutchison

    Major:
    Secondary Education and English
    Year at NAU:
    Senior
    Hometown:
    Kingman, Arizona
Why I decided to attend NAU:

I decided to go to NAU because Flagstaff is beautiful, the class sizes are relatively small compared to other state schools, they have a pretty great hands-on science secondary education program which really caught my eye, and it’s close to home.

    Why I joined Honors:

I decided to join Honors because I had always challenged myself in high school in honors classes and NAU's Honors program looked like a rigorous, yet interesting, change of pace from those classes. I was hooked on the small, seminar classes and the wide range of topics. I also thought it was a fantastic opportunity to be able to live in Cowden with the Honor's program right downstairs.

  • Karlee 2013

    Karlee King

    Major:
    Biomedical Science, Chemistry Pre-Health
    Minor:
    Chemistry
    Year at NAU:
    Junior
    Hometown:
    Mesa, Arizona
Why I decided to attend NAU:

I really wanted to stay in Arizona to attend a university. I visited NAU and fell in love with the campus and the atmosphere of Flagstaff. The smaller campus and many programs that NAU had to offer made it my first and only choice for college. I was also excited about the change in weather from my hometown, and the promise of snow and skiing!

    Why I joined Honors:

I became interested in the Honors program because I had been an Honors student throughout High School. It seemed like a great way to challenge myself and set me apart from the rest of my peers when applying to Medical School in the future. Hearing about the smaller class sizes and different honors events seemed like a fun way to make new friends and become part of a tight-knit community. Having the opportunity to get to know your professors and have class discussions was the perfect transition into college.

  • LK1415

    Leigh Kimble

    Major:
    English
    Year at NAU:
    Junior
    Hometown:
    Tucson, AZ
Why I decided to attend NAU:

I chose NAU because of the sense of community and friendly atmosphere. Everyone on this campus is so helpful and nice: students always hold open the door for each other, and professors are passionate about what they do and are always willing to help. In addition, NAU has the resources and size of a large university, but the feel of a small one. You don't get lost in the crowd here, unlike other large universities. It's simple to find a small community where you belong, but still feel like part of the larger NAU community. It's so easy to feel at home at NAU, and to feel like you truly belong.

    Why I joined Honors:

Joining Honors was an easy decision for me. I loved doing honors in high school, and college would be no different. I was eager to not waste any time at college, and I wanted to push myself and get the most out of the academics NAU had to offer. I wanted to challenge myself, but also find people and fit into a community of the same academic focus. With Honors at NAU, you not only receive academic growth and advantages, but the Honors professors and students as well.

  • CB1415

    Carrie Bindschadler

    Major:
    English
    Year at NAU:
    Junior
    Hometown:
    Tucson, AZ
Why I decided to attend NAU:

I decided to go to NAU because it was far enough away from home without being too far away. From the moment I set foot on campus I fell in love with the weather and pine trees that surround the area. I also appreciate the smaller class sizes and generally friendly atmosphere that NAU provides me.

    Why I joined Honors:

I chose to join the Honors Program because I have always loved to learn and I felt that the Honors Program would help me to learn more by giving me the opportunity to take small discussion based classes. The Honors Program surpassed all of my expectations: not only have I enjoyed the academics but I have also found a great community full of exceptional people.

    Richard Frische

    Major:
    Psychology, Communication Studies
    Year at NAU:
    Junior
    Hometown:
    Mesa, AZ
Why I decided to attend NAU:

I get an out-of-state experience at an in-state price! The NAU experience is very personal and learner-focused. I really feel like I matter here. I also love how laid-back and friendly the people are here. Flagstaff is a great college town.

    Why I joined Honors:

I joined Honors because I was invited into the program and I was attracted to the small class sizes.

  • AR1415

    Allie Reynoso

    Major:
    Exercise science
    Minor:
    Chemistry
    Year at NAU:
    Sophomore
    Hometown:
    Winters, CA
Why I decided to attend NAU:

I have lived in a small farm town in Northern California my entire life. In a setting where everybody knows everybody. I wanted to step outside of my comfort zone and find a college away from home with many new faces. I toured many colleges and just fell in love with the surroundings and kind new people the NAU had.

    Why I joined Honors:

I decided to join the honors program because I wanted to challenge myself and give myself a boost up from other students who would be applying to graduate school. I also wanted to give discussion based classes a shot because they were something completely new to me. (Ps: discussion based classes are the best!)

  • Alyssa1415

    Alyssa Ortiz

    Major:
    Biology
    Minor:
    Anthropology
    Year at NAU:
    Sophomore
    Hometown:
    Surprise, AZ
Why I decided to attend NAU:

NAU offered a great out-of-state experience without actually having to leave Arizona! I love that I am close enough to home to visit when I want, but am still far enough away to create my own independent life. The beautiful green trees and mountains along with amazing weather isn't too bad either!

    Why I joined Honors:

The NAU honors program offers a great, supportive community within the NAU campus. Honors is filled with supportive instructors and mentors while allowing me to connect with other students that share my same academic goals and interests. The honors program also provides early enrollment in academic courses and early selection for on campus housing which is a life saver when you have that one course or dorm that you just need to get!

  • AB14

    Ayla Bowman

    Major:
    Microbiology
    Minor:
    Chemistry and Theatre
    Year at NAU:
    Junior
    Hometown:
    Prescott Valley, AZ
Why I decided to attend NAU:

I choose NAU because it is big enough to offer all of the classes required for my major and minors and yet still small enough that it has a tight-knit community.

    Why I joined Honors:

There are two key reasons I chose Honors. Firstly, it offers a plethora of unique resources to its students. More importantly though, both the students and staff of the Honors Program are talented, driven people who are always ready to support one another.

  • CT1415

    Celeste Tabares

    Major:
    Philosophy, Politics, and Law
    Year at NAU:
    Sophomore
    Hometown:
    Flagstaff, Arizona
Why I decided to attend NAU:

I chose to stay in Flagstaff and attend NAU because of how close-knit and personal the university is. I take academics very seriously and it meant a lot to me to know class sizes would be significantly smaller than at the other Arizona universities and the professors would actually know my name. Although I was born and raised in Flagstaff, attending NAU and living on campus has allowed me to discover a completely different side of this mountain town and campus.

    Why I joined Honors:

After having heard so many great things about the Honors Program from family friends who work at NAU, I could not give up the chance to join the NAU Honors Program. The Honors Program provides many opportunities for both academic and personal growth. I wanted to challenge myself in and out of the classroom and give myself more of a competitive edge when applying to law school.

  • HS1415

    Hannah Salesman

    Major:
    Special/Elementary Education
    Year at NAU:
    Sophomore
    Hometown:
    Annandale, New Jersey
Why I decided to attend NAU:

I decided to attend NAU because I wanted to go somewhere completely new and foreign to what I grew up around. After visiting Flagstaff and seeing its beautiful green landscape, I knew I couldn’t go to school anywhere else. Attending college so far from home has not always been easy, but waking up to the San Francisco Peaks every morning makes it all worth it.

    Why I joined Honors:

I chose Honors simply to challenge myself. Joining the Honors program has been one of the best decisions I have ever made in my college career. My Honors classes have allowed me to expand my mind alongside fellow classmates who share similar academic goals.

  • KZ1415

    Katie Zhang

    Major:
    Anthropology
    Minor:
    Chinese and Arabic
    Year at NAU:
    Junior
    Hometown:
    Oro Valley, AZ
Why I decided to attend NAU:

I chose NAU because I liked the small class sizes and the community. At NAU I get to have the "small campus" community feel along with the "big campus" resources and opportunities. After visiting the campus and seeing how nice everyone was and how beautiful Flagstaff is, I could not wait to start my four years at Northern Arizona University.

    Why I joined Honors:

I chose Honors because I enjoy being challenged and supported by the other Honors students and teachers, after being part of honors in high school I thought that NAU honors would be a great way to continue challenging myself in my academics. The discussion based classes and professors who really take the time to get to know the students was a great fit for me and really facilitated my transition to NAU.

  • WO1415

    Weston Owens

    Major:
Strategic Communication with an emphasis in Public Relations and Business Administration Marketing
    Year at NAU:
    Sophomore
    Hometown:
    Peoria, Arizona
Why I decided to attend NAU:

I wanted the feeling of being out-of-state without actually being out-of-state. I wanted an academically-focused environment and I wanted a personalized and affordable education. NAU had everything I wanted! After spending a year at NAU, it truly feels like home to me.

    Why I joined Honors:

I was always taking honors and AP in high school and I wanted to continue to engage myself intellectually. I also knew that having a support network of my friends and instructors in the program would help me better succeed in a new college environment. Having such small class sizes would allow me to have more quality instruction from my professors and the variety of courses would allow me to really pursue my interests.
