Source: Established in honor of Professor Garland Downum,

Scholarship: G. M. Farley Scholarship Fund
Source: Established in 1988 to provide scholarship support
to meritorious students at NAU who have financial need. Contact the History
Department.
Eligibility: Full-time or part-time graduate student with a
program emphasis in western history and cultures. Majors include history,
anthropology, the social sciences, or journalism. Applicants must detail their
interests in western studies in their student letters.

Scholarship: George and Elinor Kyte Scholarship
Source: Established in 1987 by Professor George W. Kyte, who
taught at NAU from 1966 until his retirement in 1985. Contact the History

Eligibility: Full-time, thesis-track M.A. student in
history.

Scholarship: William H. Lyon U.S. History Award
Source: Established in 1990 in recognition of professor and
History Department chair, William H. Lyon, a longtime professor who served the
NAU history department from 1958 until his retirement. Contact the History
Department.
Eligibility: Full-time upper-division undergraduate or
graduate history major. Preference will be given to applicants who are
conducting research focusing on the history of the trans-Mississippi West,
Southwest, and the borderlands.

Scholarship: Francis McAllister Endowment/Transition
Foundation Fellowship
Source: Established in 1989 to provide financial support to
meritorious students in history graduate programs at NAU. Contact the History
Department.
Eligibility: Full-time graduate history major who is engaged
in original research focusing on the history of the southwestern United States.
Preference is given to a student who is at the dissertation stage of research.
Value: One award of $7,500
Scholarship: Frances McAllister Endowed Fund
Source: Established by NAU friend Frances McAllister's Transition
Foundation to provide financial support to meritorious students.
Eligibility: A full-time graduate student in the History
Department at NAU and must be directly engaged in original historical research,
with preference given to applicants who have demonstrated aptitude of
historical research and/or whose research will focus on the U.S. Southwest.

Scholarship: William Roosen History Scholarship
Source: Established in 1994 in memory of Arizona Regents’
Professor William J. Roosen, who taught at NAU from 1967 to 1993. Contact the

Eligibility: Full-time undergraduate history major;
nomination by faculty members in European history. Preference is given to
applicants who show aptitude and promise for historical research.

Scholarship: William W. Tinsley Memorial Scholarship
Source: Commemorates NAU professor of history and chair of
the Department of Social Studies from 1927-1961. Contact the History

Eligibility: Full-time history major; preference given to
juniors and seniors; character and scholarly ability.
