Frequently Asked Questions On Language Learning

I don't speak a foreign language yet. Nix, nada, zero. Does that matter?
No problem! The GSEP is specifically designed for students with no prior language experience. Of course, most high schools now require some foreign language, and that certainly couldn't hurt for the GSEP. But all GSEP programs of study officially start with language 101 and go from there... no prior foreign language experience required!

I already have some language proficiency? Can I make that work for me?
Definitely! In general, if you have creditable language proficiency of some sort, you can skip some of the language coursework that's part of GSEP. If you have language study credits from other higher education institutions, those will transfer right over to NAU. If you've learned language at home or in high school, and feel that you've retained enough to skip over some introductory courses, you can investigage the CLEP test and/or retrocredit mechanisms offered by the Modern Languages department to get credit for early courses and skip ahead. Talk to a GSEP adviser for more information.

I want to join GSEP, but I didn't get a chance to get on board as a freshman...so I'm behind on my language studies. Is there some way to catch up?
In general, you can join GSEP if we can work out a credible plan for catching up on your language studies. The absolute requirement is that you have completed three years (six semesters) of language training before going for your year abroad. To catch up, you can attend a variety of intensive summer language programs, or take online language courses alongside your regular NAU coursework. To help you out, we've come up with a list of programs for catching up on language studies... just visit the websites linked for each to find out more!
