Financial aid for NAU healthcare students

Thanks to generous gifts from our donors, the College of Health and Human Services offers a variety of scholarship opportunities to support your healthcare education.

Submit all scholarship applications, including for those listed below, through Scholarship Universe, a centralized location. There, you’ll find a pool of over 14,000 private scholarships to apply for, in addition to all of NAU’s unique scholarships. Find guidance on how to submit applications in Scholarship Universe at the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.

Basic criteria and application deadlines

The next scholarship application period begins in January 2024. This application is for scholarships that will be awarded for the 2024–2025 academic year.

The scholarship application period for 2023–2024 closed on March 17, 2023. Please check back for updates on the next application period.

How to apply

If you are a student who is unable to use Scholarship Universe due to disability, paper applications are available from the Office of the Dean.

Scholarships available to all CHHS students

Criteria:

  • majoring in an academic discipline within NAU’s College of Health and Human Services
  • enrolled as a full-time (12 semester hours or more) student
  • minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (4.0=A) at time of selection
  • US citizen
  • junior or senior level
  • resident of the Northern Arizona region
  • following graduation from the NAU College of Health and Human Services, the student is expected to consider working at Flagstaff Medical Center
  • display evidence of commitment to the health care field by either volunteer work, community involvement, or similar contributions

The David P. McElwain Health Professions Scholarship will be awarded to a full-time junior or senior, health professions or nursing undergraduate student, in the College of Health and Human Services. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above is required. Applicants must be a US citizen and are expected to pursue a career in the healthcare field following graduation.

Criteria:

  • majoring in an academic discipline within NAU’s College of Health and Human Services
  • enrolled as a full-time (12 semester hours or more) student
  • minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (4.0=A) at time of selection
  • US citizen
  • junior or senior level

The Larry A. Mullins DHA Scholarship was established in 2003 by the board of directors of Samaritan Health Services, Corvallis, OR. It was created in honor of Dr. Mullins, the President/CEO of Samaritan Health Services, upon completion of his doctoral degree in Health Care Administration (DHA) from the Medical University of South Carolina.

The scholarship fund is housed with the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation, Corvallis, OR. Dr. Mullins chairs the selection committee for the scholarship. At least one scholarship of $1000 is awarded annually from the fund.

Eligibility:

  • currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in a healthcare field
  • available to individuals without regard to race, religion, national origin, gender, age, color, disability, or marital status

Note: special consideration will be given to applicants who are currently employed in the health care field, members or veterans of the US military, and those who are willing to practice in Oregon or Arizona (veterans must submit a copy of their DD-214 Form 4 with the application). Special consideration will also be given to applicants who are currently attending one of the following institutions: Arizona State University, Glendale Community College, Linn Benton Community College, Medical University of South Carolina, Northern Arizona University, Oregon State University, and Western University of Health Sciences – COMP NW.

  • undergraduate students in health science fields
  • financial need
  • preference given to Navajo or Native American students not adequately supported financially

Criteria:

  • full-time nursing or physical therapy major
  • minimum GPA of 3.0
  • in need of financial assistance

Athletic Training

Requirements:

  1. Submit a letter of application that explains:
    • why you’re deserving of this scholarship
    • your career goals
    • your future plans to contribute to the profession nationally or with the state organization
    • what a college education means to you personally
  2. Have a minimum of a 3.30 college GPA.
  3. Be a first year student in the MSAT program at time of application (scholarship will be awarded for 2nd year in program).
  4. Submit two letters of recommendation, both from Certified Athletic Trainers.
  5. Demonstrate proof of membership in the National Athletic Trainers’ Association.
  6. Submit your letter of application, with GPA, proof of NATA membership, and recommendations to the ATEP Program Director in ONE paper document (not electronically).

Michael E. Nesbitt Sports Medicine Scholarship

Awarded to a graduate AT student entering the 2nd year of the MSAT program (application occurs during 1st year in MSAT program).

Requirements:

  • Applicant must be nominated by a clinical preceptor or faculty member in the MSAT program
  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.5
  • Be a graduate student pursuing a career in athletic training
  • Submit a reference list which includes at least 3 certified athletic trainers

Dental Hygiene

The Department of Dental Hygiene will be awarding a scholarship to one full-time student. This scholarship will be given for academic achievement (minimum 3.0 GPA) and financial need. Applicant must be in good standing in the dental hygiene department.

The Department of Dental Hygiene will be awarding a scholarship to dental hygiene students who meet one of the two following criteria:

  • dental hygiene students who demonstrate financial need , scholastic ability, and service to the department, community, and/or profession of dentistry/dental hygiene, or
  • beginning dental hygiene students who will commit to working in an Arizona-designated rural community for three years after graduation.

Available to an undergraduate student majoring in Dental Hygiene at NAU who demonstrates financial need.

Additional criteria:

  • full-time student
  • minimum 3.0 GPA
  • must be a member of one of the following Native American Tribes:
    • first preference to a member of the Navajo Tribe
    • second preference to a member of the Hopi Tribe
    • please note: a copy of your Certificate of Indian Blood must be attached to your application

The Department of Dental Hygiene will be awarding a scholarship to a student who participates in clinical education experiences external to the Flagstaff campus environment. The awarded student should engage in interdisciplinary study abroad experiences, enabling them to work with faculty to provide critical healthcare services to underserved populations.

This fund shall be used to provide travel and other support for an NAU Dental Hygiene student who meets the following criteria:

  • accepted into the NAU Dental Hygiene program and currently in good standing, as defined by the Dental Hygiene Chair
  • selected to serve a student externship in Dental Hygiene
  • gives volunteer time and service to NAU and/or to the Dental Hygiene profession
  • demonstrates financial need

The Department of Dental Hygiene will be awarding this scholarship to one full-time student. This scholarship will be given for academic achievement (minimum 3.0 GPA) and financial need.

The Department of Dental Hygiene will be awarding this scholarship to a full-time student. This scholarship will be given for academic achievement and financial need. Preference will be given to Arizona residents.

Health Sciences

This is a renewable scholarship. The criteria for this scholarship are:

  • health exercise science, physical education, or nutrition majors

Nursing

Applicants must be officially admitted to the School of Nursing to qualify.

Established in honor of Martha Chapman, who was born and raised in Morenci, AZ. She received a degree in nursing from Washington University in St. Louis, MO. A former surgical nurse, she came to NAU when it was Arizona State College (ASC) in Flagstaff, where she was employed as the college nurse at ASC Health Center with Dr. Martin Fronske. She left the university and was employed as a school nurse in Flagstaff public schools from where she retired.

Criteria:

  • accepted to nursing program
  • full-time student
  • must have a GPA of 3.0 or better
  • preference is given to a high school graduate from northern Arizona

Established by Burley and Josephine Blunk in loving memory of their son, Allen Blunk.

Criteria:

Established by a bequest of Arizona Hazlewood, a longtime resident of Globe, Arizona and friend of Northern University alumna Marie Hachtel.

Criteria:

  • must be a nursing major at Northern Arizona University
  • financial need

Established in memory of Betty Jean Laman by her family and friends. Betty Jean Laman came to school for a nursing degree after raising her family. She graduated 2nd in the class and was known as a “class mother.” Betty Jean was killed in an accident two years after her graduation.

Criteria:

  • must be a deserving nursing student who has successfully completed the first year of the nursing program at the time this scholarship is received
  • financial need

  • enrolled in 6 credits
  • first preference given to those interested in working in clinics where culture, race, and language are barriers for patients
  • second preference given to those who are bilingual

Established in loving memory of Eleanor Joan Kellis. Eleanor Kellis received her nursing degree from Good Samaritan School of Nursing in Phoenix, AZ. Eleanor enjoyed adventure and helping others. She worked in a variety of areas of nursing and as a volunteer for the American Red Cross and Children’s Hospital. She provided patient care at several hospitals and found her niche in Utilization Review. Joan’s father, brother, mother-in-law, and brother-in-law all received degrees from NAU.

Criteria:

  • deserving nursing student, to be decided by the School of Nursing scholarship committee in coordination with the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid

Memorial established for Holly Hart-Vande Veegaete, who was a nursing student, and her son, who died in an automobile accident.

Criteria:

  • must have completed their first year of the nursing program
  • financial need

Criteria:

  • undergraduate or graduate student in the School of Nursing
  • preference given to female, single parent, financial need
  • minimum GPA of 3.5

Established by Marge Maston, a 1989 graduate of NAU, to express her gratitude for the excellent care delivered by nurses and to encourage others to follow the example of the nurses who work so selflessly and tirelessly to help others in times of great need.

Criteria:

  • for a full-time nursing student (12 credit hours or more) in good standing

Established by her husband in memory of Dawn Fenski-Lopez. Dawn began her career as a manufacturing associate with W. L. Gore and Associates, a medical device manufacturer. She spent the next 22 years with the company, eventually working her way up to the role of Foreign Regulatory Affairs Associate. Dawn’s work inspired in her, an interest in healthcare studies. She decided that returning to school to pursue a degree in nursing would broaden her understanding of the impact of medical devices on diseases and disorders of the body. Her goal was cut short when in 2002 she suffered a stroke which forced her to retire to focus on her rehabilitation. Dawn touched many lives in the Flagstaff community and developed lasting friendships with people from a number of different countries. It is in her memory and her love of life that our family created this scholarship. It is our hope that in some small way we can help others achieve one goal that Dawn was never able to complete.

Established by Dorothy Morrow Warnock to support students in their pursuit of nursing degrees.

Memorial established for Ellen Rasmussen, a nurse at Flagstaff Medical Center and a member of NAU Lambda Omicron Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International.

Criteria:

  • undergraduate or graduate student
  • enrolled full-time
  • maintains a GPA of 2.5 or above, financial need
  • US citizen
  • preference given to mature women seeking a second career, retraining, or advanced training

Established for Barbara Cline, a 1969 graduate of NAU’s registered nurse’s program. She worked for over 20 years in Flagstaff’s nursing community.

Recipient will be a dedicated and deserving undergraduate or graduate Northern Arizona University student accepted by the School of Nursing who has done one or more of the following:

  • acquired mature judgment
  • held jobs after high school
  • become divorced
  • worked as nurses’ aide and wishes to continue education
  • high morals and ideals of service

Established by Dr. Lindquist, Medical Oncologist, and Avatar Master, to encourage nursing students to explore the area of oncology as a career choice, and to remind that as we give compassion to others, we must also remember to simultaneously give it to ourselves as caregivers.

Criteria:

  • full-time undergraduate junior or senior in the BSN program at NAU
  • maintains a GPA of 3.0 or above
  • financial need
  • preference given to a student with an interest in oncology

Established by Jean and Gilbert Sechrist, MD, in honor of their daughter Lisa Sechrist Lipke. The Sechrist family has a long history in the Flagstaff Medical community. Charles Sechrist (grandfather to Lisa), came to Flagstaff and co-founded the Flagstaff Hospital and was a physician-surgeon. Gilbert Sechrist, son of Charles, was a prominent pediatrician in Flagstaff until his retirement. Lisa followed in the family’s footsteps, earning her Nursing degree from NAU in 1995. She has been a nurse in telemetry, medical/surgical, and pediatric sub-acute oncology. This scholarship is to honor this tradition and support the health of our communities.

Criteria:

  • enrolled as a full-time undergraduate junior or senior in the BSN program
  • maintains a GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Arizona resident
  • financial need

As our senior population grows, the Peaks Senior Living Community wants to support RNs to complete their BSN degrees.

Criteria:

  • must be a registered nurse and returning to NAU for their BS in nursing
  • enrolled full-time at NAU
  • maintains a 3.0 GPA or above

Established by the Nicolls family to honor the character of Ruth and her life practices of demonstration of integrity and ethical life choices, while incorporating the ideals of community, commitment, and care within the health care profession. Ruth Nicolls taught in the NAU nursing program from 1979 to 2002.

Criteria:

  • undergraduate BSN student at the sophomore level or above
  • completed the freshman year courses with at least a 3.0 GPA
  • registered for a minimum of six semester hours
  • financial need
  • preference for students who reflect characteristics of ethics and integrity, people skills, volunteer work, community commitment and care, and are bilingual

Established by Lambda Omicron Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International

Criteria:

  • undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in the nursing program part-time or full-time
  • financial need
  • minimum GPA of 2.5

Criteria:

  • student enrolled full-time in the School of Nursing Master of Science Family Nurse Practitioner program
  • maintains a GPA of 3.5
  • Arizona resident
  • demonstrates a commitment to the health of citizens in the state of Arizona and the desire to continue working in Arizona

Established by Brenda Dorman in memory of her son, Jory Dorman, an NAU student and Flagstaff High School graduate who died tragically.

Criteria:

  • must be admitted into the nursing program at Northern Arizona University
  • a Flagstaff area high school graduate
  • maintains a GPA of 3.0 or above

Established by friends and family in loving memory of Corine Turner and Linda Davis that were killed in a hit and run. During Corine’s career she was a school nurse for Gila Bend High School for 30 years and implemented the Diabetes Prevention Program on the San Lucy Reservation. Linda, with her steadfastness, helped to build a successful family business and was a beacon of hope with her commitment to serve wherever she was needed. Together, they volunteered their time at school and community functions. An annual walk is held in memory of the two best friends. Proceeds are donated to the scholarship to embrace the women’s “pay it forward” philosophy.

  • Yuma enrolled full-time nursing program undergraduate
  • maintains a 3.0 GPA or above
  • financial need

Established by Harold and Marion Elliott as a tangible demonstration of their lifelong support and involvement in the education of the young people of Yuma, AZ. Both have their bachelor’s and master’s degrees from NAU. Their devotion to education, and loyalty to NAU, translated into a number of volunteer leadership rolls for NAU. Each of them served as president of a major support organization of the University: Harold as president of the NAU Alumni Association and Marion as president of the NAU Foundation.

Criteria:

  • Yuma enrolled senior undergraduate student or a graduate student enrolled in the nursing program
  • maintains a GPA of 3.0 or above
  • must show promise in their academic field

This fund was established to provide support to Yuma County residents pursuing a degree in nursing in the NAU/AWC educational partnership in Yuma.

Criteria:

  • resident of Yuma County
  • enrolled in the NAU/Yuma partnership program
  • majoring in nursing
  • maintains a GPA of 3.0 or above

Physical Therapy

The Joseph S. Aubin Memorial Scholarship is offered to full-time students, in good standing, enrolled in the physical therapy program.

Must be accepted into the physical therapy program, enrolled as a full-time student, with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (4.0=A) or above at the time of selection, and must be a US citizen.

  • must have been accepted into the physical therapy program
  • preference may be given to students who have a dependent child or children

The Gregg E. Kollman Scholarship has the following criteria:

  • students must be accepted into the NAU physical therapy doctoral program
  • Arizona resident
  • demonstrate financial need
  • students may not receive this scholarship more than once

Criteria:

  • the student must be a full-time student and a junior in the NAU physical therapy program
  • the award will be based on the applicant’s academic performance while in the physical therapy program
  • financial need

Criteria:

  • current enrollment in the physical therapy program and maintenance of enrollment in good standing
  • current membership in the America Physical Therapy Association (APTA) professional organization
  • financial need as defined by registration with the NAU Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid
  • demonstrated current and ongoing community service
  • recipients are only eligible to receive this scholarship for one year and may not reapply

Complete the application for NAU Foundation scholarships.

If you are presenting at a conference, the College of Health and Human Services offers travel reimbursement up to $200 for approved applicants (no reimbursements for meals or incidentals). Applications will be accepted through April 15th of the academic year in which the travel takes place or until the funds have been awarded. Students who apply earlier will improve their chances of success.
