Bachelor of Science in Nursing program requirements  

To earn your degree at the Flagstaff, Tucson, Yuma, and reservation-based campuses, you must complete the following three components:

• pre-professional requirements (at least 47 units)
• liberal studies requirements (at least 35 units)
• professional requirements (at least 73 units)

Pre-professional requirements

The following courses must be completed or in-progress in order to apply to the professional program.  You must have a 3.0 GPA in these courses.  

Prerequisite courses required for admission:

• ENG 105 (Critical Reading and Writing) OR
  ENG 101 &102 (College Composition, 2 semesters)
• Math Foundation (College Algebra or higher) OR MAT 114 (Quantitive Reasoning)
• BIO 181/181L (Unity of Life and Lab) OR
  CHM 130/151L (Fundamental Chemistry and Lab)
• BIO 201/201L (Anatomy & Physiology I and Lab)
• BIO 202/202L (Anatomy & Physiology II and Lab)
• BIO 205/205L (Microbiology and Lab)
• PSY 101 (Intro to Psychology)
• PSY 230 Introduction to Statistics in Psychology
• PSY 240 Developmental Psychology
• NTS 135 (Applied Nutrition) OR
  NTS 256 (Medical Nutrition)
• STA 270 Applied Statistics
• Completed ALL liberal study requirements (see below)

Liberal study requirements

You must also complete 35 credit hours of liberal studies courses prior to applying for the professional program.

Liberal studies courses required for admission:

• Foundation requirements (7 units):
  • English Composition (4 units)
  • Mathematics (3 units)
   
• Distribution requirements (25 units):
  • Science - must include at least one lab science (7 units)
  • Aesthetic and Humanistic Inquiry (6 units)
  • Cultural Understanding (6 units)
  • Social and Political Worlds (6 units)
   
• Liberal studies elective (3 units):
  • one additional elective course from any of the liberal study requirements

Professional requirements

Once you have completed the pre-requisite and liberal studies requirements, you can apply [link to: 1.0.2 BSN admissions] to the BSN program. Once you are admitted, you must take at least 6 units of support courses in combination with the 67 units of sequenced nursing courses below.

Support courses:

• BIO 320 (General Pathology) (3 units)
• SHP 300W (Applied Ethics in Healthcare) (3 units) OR
  any other junior writing course as approved by the School of Nursing that fulfills the university’s junior writing requirement

Professional Nursing courses:

Semester One (10 units):  

• NUR 205 (5 units)
• NUR 214 (2 units)
• NUR 215 (3 credits)

Semester Two (14 units):  

• NUR 208 (8 units)
• NUR 321 (3 units)
• NUR 390 (3 units)

Semester Three (16 units): 

• NUR 212 (8 units)
• NUR 216 (5 units)
• NUR 320 (3 unit)

Semester Four (15 units): 

• NUR 211 (7 units)
• NUR 350 (5 units)
• NUR 424 (3 units)

Semester Five (12 units): 

• NUR 427 (5 units)
• NUR 450C (3 units) – meets senior capstone requirement
• NUR 451 (4 units) 

Things to remember:

• NAU requires that at least 30 units of the courses you take must be upper-division courses (300 level and above).
• You may be able to use some courses to meet more than one requirement; however, you must still meet the total of at least 120 units to graduate.
