Undergraduate Mentoring
Undergraduate Research Mentoring (URM): Helping
students succeed in life sciences research
This 12-month scholarship-mentoring program helps
undergraduates from diverse backgrounds excel in the life sciences. The goals
of our program are to:
- recruit talented students from diverse
backgrounds as URM Scholars
- provide research training though mentoring
partnerships with cutting-edge researchers
- help Scholars accomplish their research
objectives and excel in academics
- refer Scholars to graduate programs and
careers in the life sciences
Program details
If you’re selected, you’ll choose a mentor who will help you:
- develop a research prospectus and plan
- complete the research
- prepare and present a final paper
You would be required to take a two credit course,
Foundations of Research (ENV 499), every semester.
Program benefits
The
program has many benefits. URM Scholars:
- are awarded up
to $15,000 per year in a combination of scholarships and wages
- receive a
$2,000 scholarship for both the fall and spring terms
- are paid $10
per hour for their research efforts
- work as
part-time researchers during the academic year and full-time during the
summer
- share their
findings during research symposia at the end of spring term and at the end of
the summer
- are provided an
allowance of $500 for travel related to research or professional
meetings

Eligibility
The program’s intent is to encourage undergraduates from
underrepresented groups to pursue academic careers in life sciences fields.
Underrepresented groups in biology include, but are not limited
to:
- African American
- Hispanic American
- American Indian/Alaska Native
- Pacific Islander
- special needs
- students returning to school after an extended
hiatus
