Bachelor of Science in Geology
Our program
is field, laboratory, and computer oriented, utilizing state-of-the-art GPS
(Global Positioning System) and GIS (Geographic Information Systems)
technologies in coursework. You’ll engage in fieldwork in some of the most
spectacular geologic sites in North America and numerous National Parks will be
at your doorstep, including:
- Grand Canyon
- Bryce
- Zion
- Death Valley
You’ll take a set of core courses and may select an emphasis
or set of classes that focuses on a particular specialty by your junior year,
including:
- environmental geology
- paleontology
- geophysics
- hydrogeology
If you don’t want to specialize, you’ll select our
"general geology" emphasis.

Honors in Geology
If you earn excellent grades and successfully complete a
research project, you may be eligible to receive departmental honors upon
graduation—consult with your adviser. To
obtain departmental honors, you must:
- have an overall GPA of 3.5 or better
- have a GPA of 3.5 or better in all classes with
a GLG prefix
- take at least four hours of GLG 485 with a
written research product
- or at least one hour of GLG 485 and three hours
of GLG 49
- or author an abstract or article in a refereed
publication, to the satisfaction of the supervising faculty member and
departmental undergraduate committee
- prior to graduation, obtain written endorsements
from the faculty member who supervised your research and the departmental
undergraduate committee
