Mathematics and statistics placement  

We are committed to helping you succeed in our department. It’s important that you have a solid a foundation of understanding as you move forward with your studies.

For this reason, we require that you have the appropriate placement to enroll in each mathematics or statistics course to determine which mathematics or statistics course is most appropriate for you.

Placement procedure for mathematics and statistics courses 

The university uses the ALEKS (Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces) Mathematics Placement Test to accurately measure students’ mathematics knowledge, and will indicate a specific math placement for each student.

Information for students admitted for fall 2010 or later 

If you were admitted to the university for fall 2010 or later, you must take the ALEKS Mathematics Placement Test, unless you have done one of the following:

  • earned credit for a college-level mathematics or statistics course via a CLEP exam, AP exam, or IB exam
  • earned credit for a college-level mathematics or statistics course via dual enrollment or via transfer from another college or university

Information for students enrolled prior to fall 2010 

If you enrolled at the university prior to fall 2010, you must take the ALEKS Mathematics Placement Test unless you have previous mathematics placement based on ACT, SAT or ACCUPLACER exams (available through LOUIE in Test Results under "PLACE/ MATH"), earned credit for a college-level mathematics or statistics course via CLEP exam, AP exam, IB exam, or earned credit for a college-level mathematics or statistics course via dual enrollment or via transfer from another college or university.

All students without credit for a college-level mathematics or statistics course as of fall 2013 must take the ALEKS Mathematics Placement Test to establish their mathematics placement.
