Next Generation Science Standards
New Standards for Science are Here
The Center for Science Teaching and Learning is excited about the release of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). We enthusiastically support the vision set forth in the NGSS and its interrelated approach to K–12 science instruction. The NGSS establish performance expectations for learners that call for them to demonstrate understanding across three important dimensions—science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas, and crosscutting concepts. Learners who engage in science instruction that is thoughtfully rooted in the NGSS throughout kindergarten through 12th grade will construct deeper understanding of essential science concepts and engineering practices. Because this new vision for science education is broad and all-encompassing, we recognize that it will require substantial and consistent professional learning to support classroom implementation. We hope that the resources listed here will assist you in learning more about the NGSS.
