Northern Arizona University is a national leader in sustainable practices and promotion.

• Northern Arizona University is one of only 40 universities to earn a gold rating from the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS).
• Northern Arizona University was named one of the Sierra Club's "Cool Schools,” which ranks the nation's "greenest" universities.
• The university was listed in the Princeton Review’s Guide to Green Colleges for its “exemplary commitment to sustainability.”
• Northern Arizona University was one of 15 institutions nationwide awarded a $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation to educate and inspire interest among rural and Native American students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs, and to increase public awareness of global climate change.
• The Footprints project, led by George“Wolf” Gumerman, promotes the cultural sustainability of Hopi communities by engaging Hopi high school students in programs that focus on traditions, culture, and history.
